Malawi International Film Festival was officially launched on 18th September 2009. The launch was graced by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife. The film festival is a yearly event that takes place in September. Every year the committee is innovative adding something and unique to the setup of the festival, the 2010 Festival will give suburban residents an opportunity to see another world beyond imagination bringing the culture, history and language of others closer to them.

The festival was established with an aim of developing the film industry in Malawi. The main objectives of the festival are to;

  • Reestablish a culture of cinema going
  • Building local capacity in filmmaking by creating opportunities for upcoming filmmakers by providing training
  • Encouraging an educated enjoyment and dialogue with films and different arts
  • Opening window to the outside world
  • Creating a place for interaction and entertainment while creating a cultural exchange platform
  • Increase locally produced films
  • To create a market for both cinema and television
